Portland + Gregory

Grown as a bedroom community.

Portland sits on a bluff over Nueces Bay, mostly in San Patricio County, and grew in the 1960s and '70s largely as a bedroom community for Corpus Christi. The Nueces Bay Causeway still ties the two together.

Census estimates put Portland's median home at 1987, with about 43% built before 1980. One way to update a kitchen from those decades without a full tear-out is the refresh on this site: painted cabinets, new countertops and a new backsplash.

Gregory, three miles northeast at the junction of US 181, State Highway 35 and State Highway 361, is named for U.S. Attorney General Thomas Watt Gregory. Its housing is older still, with a median year built of 1976 and most homes predating 1980. Both towns are served by Gregory-Portland ISD, and Portland's median home value is about $234,800.

In Portland and nearby Gregory, Jacob takes on kitchens, bathrooms and flooring. Everything else is Corpus Christi only.
